A new adult member
of Highlands says, "When I first came to Highlands, I was invited to
attend the Thursday Night Together Fellowship where I was given a church
t-shirt. This made me feel very welcome and a part of what I have come
to know as the caring community that is this church."
A youth member of
Highlands says, "Highlands has opened so many new doors for me. I have
learned so much and have grown spiritually. Highlands is home to so
many great people, a church family is something I truly need as a
teenager."
A Highlands Choir
member says, "At HUMC, we have an excellent music program. Our Choir
Director is the greatest! Besides sharing God's message through
beautiful music, we also learn different ways to help us improve our
singing. Its fun. During the fifth Sunday services, the congregations
selects their favorite hymns. Many wonderful old hymns are sung.
Singing and being in our choir is a joyful, worshipful experience.
Highlands has six
stained-glass windows. We are proud of them, but we are much more
proud of our people. That's why you see a representative of our people
at the top of each web page. Highlands is people worshiping God, doing
His work and leading others to Christ, not a building or stained-glass
windows. Pictures of some of our congregation are at
Pictures from Recent Services.
Highlands' History
On April 17,
1960, Highlands Methodist Church was chartered. The Rev. Charles
Emory Burton had been appointed at Conference in 1959, and the new
church had been meeting in homes in the rapidly growing Northwest
area of Huntsville. Young families were moving into the area. New
schools and shopping centers were being built, and Huntsville was in
it's "Boom Years." As the membership increased the group began
meeting at Terry Heights School. Land was donated by Mr. Barney
Musgrove, and construction was begun. As ground was broken for the
first building on Broadmor Road much of the surrounding area was yet
to be developed. The first of a series of buildings was underway.
Over the years some dozen ministers have served Highlands, over one
thousand members have joined the church, all ages have been
nurtured, young people have accepted the call to minister in various
fields throughout the world.
Now,
forty-six years later, new families are moving to Huntsville. We are
situated in a "neighborhood setting" -- which is not a bad thing.
Highlands United Methodist Church can provide a warm and inviting
congregation, welcoming residents of the neighborhood, providing a
safe place for children to come for Vacation Church School and other
activities. Working together we can continue to "bloom where we are
planted!"
