Many of us have been hungry physically, whether
it’s in between meals, while fasting, or after exercising. We know well what it
feels like for our stomachs to gurgle and growl when our bodies need something
to eat. But it’s harder for us to recognize when we are spiritually hungry,
sometimes.
Every
one of us needs to be sustained by God, but we don’t always recognize that we
need to be filled by grace, that we are hungry for the life-giving bread that
Jesus offers. In fact, the grace that God offers is his own self, the very
flesh and blood of Jesus, the bread of life. And we know that God offers
Godself in particular instances that we call “means of grace.” These special
times and experiences include prayer, communion, baptism, reading Scripture,
communal worship, and many others. When we know that God is abundantly offered
in these places and at these times, why don’t we take every opportunity to take
in all that we can get of God’s grace? First, we have to have the humility to
know that we are hungry. King Solomon knew that he was hungry and knew where to
go to be filled. Listen to today’s sermon to hear his story.
