Reach the Summit

Everyday we live we are in the process of becoming.

Whether we are in the process of becoming better or worse depends on what we devote ourselves too.

Most people do not understand success.  It isn’t the lottery.  We don’t stop at the corner convenience store on the way home, buy a ticket, and wait for success to strike.  Nor is success a place we find when we reach some magical time of life.  Success is not a destination thing, it’s a daily thing.  The only way to achieve real success is to do it one day at a time.  Remember what God did as He created the heaven and the earth.

To be successful in reaching our goals, we don’t need to be lucky or rich.  But we need to Know:

We are what we do lately.

We first form habits; then our habits form us.
It is just as easy to form habits of success as it is to form habits of failure.

Dr. John C. Maxwell spoke highly of Jim Whittaker.  Dr. Max stated:

Jim Whittaker knows how to reach goals.

In 1963, he became the first American to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Two years later, he guided Bobby Kennedy on an ascent of the newly named Mount Kennedy, enabling the Senator to become the first person to the peak that has been named in honor of his late brother, President John F. Kennedy.

In 1978, Whittaker organized and led the first successful American expedition to Summit K2, the world’s second highest mountain, which elite climbers consider the most dangerous and challenging on earth.

Whether Jim Whittaker is climbing a mountain or examining the bottom line, he takes goal reaching to an entirely new level.

Dr. Maxwell asked Jim Whittaker what he considered his greatest achievement.  He could have mentioned any of the extraordinary “firsts” that have become his hallmark, but he didn’t.  He said, “that I have led more people to summit the Everest, K2 and other great mountains than anyone else.”

Might I say what a powerful reminder; that the most fulfilling pursuits are those in which we enable other people to succeed.

Those of us who are courageous enough to aim for the Summit or continue the climb, Mrs. Bahr, our Pastor Parish Relations Staff Chairperson will need to summit a report to Rev. Bell in a very few days concerning the next goals on Highland’s horizon and what it will take to reach them.  The goals will not be literal mountains, but may seem mountainous nonetheless, and it will take a strategic approach to reach the summit.

Dr. Maxwell has suggested several essential factors in achieving life’s goals.  Follow these seven steps:

  1.

Make a commitment to grow daily.

  2.

Value the process more than the events.

  3.

Don’t wait for inspiration.

  4.

Be willing to sacrifice pleasure for opportunity.  “Pay now:  Pay later”

  5. Dream big.  Don’t think of limits.  Someone has said, “If it aint broke, don’t break it.”
  6.

Plan your priorities.  Manage time.  We will never regain it.

  7. Give up to go up.

Company is coming!
