What Do You Seek?©
Jesus performed miracle after miracle in the
presence of thousands of people. From healing the sick to feeding five thousand
people with only five loaves of bread and two fish, the people were amazed by
him and started to form crowds to follow him. They were hungry for more. But
they didn’t even know what they should be searching for. They were asking for
perishable, finite, limited food. Food that wouldn’t keep them satisfied for
long. They wanted to see more signs, more wonders. But Jesus had more to
offer than even these miracles. Jesus offered abundant life. “I am the bread
of life,” he said. “Whoever comes to me will never be hungry; and whoever
believes in me will never be thirsty.”
What do you seek? We get hungry and yearn for
something to fill us up, too. But what can trip us up is that we can easily
think we’re coming to Jesus to fill us up, just like the crowd went to Jesus
asking for signs – but what we’re really doing is searching for more perishable
food, because we never get satisfied
Part of it has to do with our intentions: “Man
I really need some energy for this coming week – I need to go to church so I can
get pepped up” It won’t last. I go to church because it really makes my wife
happy that the family can be together at least one day a week” That’s not going
to last either. “I’m here because the people are so nice and loving” That’s
not always going to do it for you. “I’m here because it’s a place that makes me
feel better about myself.” That’s not always going to fully satisfy you. “I go
to church because it helps me feel less guilty about my past life.” But that’s
not enduring either.
And for all the reasons we go to church and all
the ways we think we’re seeking Jesus, what we’re really after is perishable
food – like eating a piece of bread hoping we won’t be hungry again tomorrow –
and then we are.
The
saying is true: we are what we eat. Jesus says, “seek me” - when Jesus am what
you are really after, and when you have truly opened yourself to him – “I will
feed you, I will fill you up,” he says. “I will sustain you so that you will
never have to scratch and peck and search and yearn for something, anything,
that will just leave you hungry again.”
