A Legacy of Stewardship
Webster’s New World Dictionary defines Legacy as:
1. Money or property left to someone by will.
2. Anything handed down from or as from an ancestor.
Please note the gravity and seriousness of today’s message. Every one of us will leave a legacy, and that legacy will indeed reflect the quality of our stewardship. “Those who have been given a trust must prove faithful,” as stated by Paul in 1 Corinthians 4:3. Might I reinerate that faithfulness is expressed in the way we manage the resources entrusted to us by God. And, as Jesus said, “to whom much is given, much is required.”
It is hoped that today’s message will indeed challenge us to leave a legacy of stewardship. Stewardship involves our money, but its much more than that, and that is why I want to stress three priorities in stewardship: the legacy of hope, the legacy of help, and the legacy of honor. These three elements are essentials of a balanced life and ministry.
A Legacy of Hope is realized through a real life commitment to communicating the message of God’s living truth. Not a wish-it-were-so hope, but a solid, certain hope in the timeless message of the Gospel.
David, the man after God’s very own heart in the text of 2 Samuel 23:1-8 recalls his very modest beginning as a son of Jesse, whom God exalted to the throne of Israel. Of the 150 Psalms in the book of Psalms, 73 are attributed to David. It was God who “raised up on high.” In verse 23:2 “The Spirit of the Lord spoke…” Thus David claimed that he spoke the words of God through his inspired poetry or music.
Therefore, David voiced God’s expectations for rulers. Bringing blessings like the light dawn after the rain, like a clear morning, like tender grass, each of these similes speak of new life, purity, and refreshment. The function of the king was not to impoverish the nation. Instead, the King was ennoble the people as he presented to them the refreshing will of God. David’s inspired message depicts a legacy of hope.
A Legacy of Help is left by one who devotes time and treasure to the things that matter supporting the ministry of the church, providing for the poor and disadvantaged, caring for the sick, encouraging the weak, reaching the unreached. There is the rhetorical question expressed in David’s faith. David believed that God would carry out His promise. This covenant was based on God’s unchangeable will.
A Legacy of Honor is the by product of a deep, genuine desire to glorify God by uplifting His word and extending His love and grace.
The wise, faithful steward who does these things leaves a legacy of true and lasting importance. At the bottom line, the sum of one’s gifts – spiritual, personal, and financial – are intended for a timeless purpose.
