Abundant Leftovers©
John 6 includes the familiar story of Jesus
feeding fives thousand people with only 5 loaves of bread and two fish. The
disciples were more than a little skeptical about how they were going to feed
all of those people. It seemed like such an impossible task! It seemed like
they didn’t have nearly enough to even put a dent in the hunger of the people
standing there before them. And yet, Jesus took the little bit of food that
they could gather and turned it into enough for the whole crowd. More than
enough, even. There were abundant leftovers.
There
are problems that we face as a church, as families, as communities, as a world
that often see like more than we can understand, much less do anything about.
We feel like the few gifts, resources, talents, or energy that we have aren’t
nearly enough to even put a dent in the challenges we face. And yet, time and
time again we have witnessed the way Jesus takes whatever we can muster and
turns our gifts into great things. May we have to courage to offer whatever we
can, and the joy of watching God do great things with our lives, our
congregation, and our world!
