A Fulfilled Discipline

St. John 16:12-13

Once Saint Francis of Assisi was confronted by a brother who asked him repeatedly, “Why you?  Why you?”  Saint Francis responded, in today’s terms, “Why me what?”

“Why does everyone want to see you? Hear you? Obey you?  You are not handsome, nor learned, nor from a noble family.  Yet the world seems to want to follow you.”  The brother said.

At that, Saint Francis raised his eyes to heaven, knelt in praise to God, and turned to his interrogator.

“You want to know?  It is because the eyes of the Most High have willed it so.  He continually watches the good and the wicked, and as His most holy eyes have not found among sinners any smaller man, nor anymore insufficient and sinful, therefore He has chosen me to accomplish the marvelous work which God has undertaken; He chose me because He could find none more worthless, and He wished to confound the nobility and grandeur, the powerful, the beauty and the learning of this world.”

The disciples of Christ were trained superbly.  The Master Teacher taught by precept and example.  His teaching was done “on the way.”  The Master Teacher’s classrooms were the highways of life; His principles and values came across in the midst of daily experience.

Discipline:

Martin Luther has been described as a man easy to approach.  He had common sense, a playful humor, eager laughter, sincerity, and honesty.  In addition, he had courage, conviction, and love for Christ.  It is no wonder that he inspired loyalty that had the strength of steel.

It is said of Hudson Taylor, the missionary pioneer to China:  “A man full of faith and the Holy Ghost, of entire surrender to God and His call of great self-denial, heart felt compassion, rare powering prayer, marvelous organizing faculty, indefatigable perseverance, and of astounding influences with men, and withal of a childlike simplicity himself.”

Yet, God gave these leaders talents and gifts suitable for their individual calling.  The question has been asked, what raised these men above their fellows?  The answer is the degree to which they developed those gifts through devotion and discipline.  You see, before we can conquer the world, we must first conquer the self.

Samuel Chadwick, the great Methodist preacher and principal of Cliff College, made an immense impact on his generation.  He rose each morning and took a cold bath, summer and winter.  His study light was seldom out before two in the morning.  That rigorous lifestyle was the outward expression of his intense inner discipline.

This same discipline was sighted throughout the life of another Methodist preacher, George Whitefield.  He rose at 4:00 in the morning and retired each night at 10:00.

God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

Through these three we have the victory if we faint not.
