Jesus Followed His Father’s Example

John 5:1-9,17

Good morning church, its good that we are afforded this grand opportunity to worship together.

This morning the foundation of our subject is found in John’s Gospel Chapter 5:1-45.

-       It should not surprise us that Jesus according to John has attending another feast.

-       It should not surprise us that Jesus has healed another man on the Sabbath day.

-       It should not surprise us, the position the Jews took against Jesus for healing this man on the Sabbath.

John tells of Jesus conversing with the man who had been in that condition for 38 years.  He was not the only man there, but Jesus had learned that this man had been in that condition for a long time.  Jesus and the man were having a casual conversation, or so it appeared.  Jesus followed his father’s example and asked the man if he wanted to get well.

We have come today to the Saving Station.  There are the sick among us.  Do you want to get well?  There are the stressed in attendance.  Do you want to be delivered? There are some struggling with finance.  Do you want to be delivered?  Whatever the shortfall, do you desire Jesus’ help?  But Percy, but nothing!

Jesus doesn’t desire to hear our sad stories.  Jesus wants to see our faith.  He wants to hear us saying, Yes Lord!

Before the man in John’s story could respond, Jesus asked, “Pick up thy mat and walk.”  Jesus was following the example of God.  God’s example found in the book of Genesis.  “Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.” (Genesis 3:8)

Dietrich Bonhoeffer:

“Come out of your hiding place, from your self-reproach, your covering, your secrecy, your self torment, from vain remorse.”

Jesus is being accused of wrong doings, when in fact all he’s doing is following the example of his father, God.  The Jews are angry with Jesus for breaking the Sabbath Law, and for encouraging the man to carry his mat on the Sabbath, too.  When in fact Jesus had not broken the Law at all.  What Jesus did was what he saw his father do.  God in Genesis broke the Sabbath rest to rescue Adam and Eve from the sinful grip of Satan.  Jesus broke the Sabbath rest many times to continue the work of his father.

Thank God, for sending Jesus who says, “Pass the blame to me.”  God’s man and Messiah and Savior said, “Pass the blame to me.”  The buck stopped with Jesus.

We see this so clearly on Calvary’s three crosses, “blameless Jesus hung between two blame worthy thieves.”  But on that hill, a miracle happened.  One of the thieves ceased cursing and began to listen.  He said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”  (Luke 23:42)

Can’t we stop passing the buck?  The buck of guilt.  The buck of pride!  The buck of blame!  Are you able to admit the guilt of your sin is yours alone?  And then, have you passed it on to Jesus.

This is what the woman at the well was able to do so well.  She passed her sins on to Jesus.
