This Sunday’s
sermon invites remembrance of the Baptism of Jesus, a baptism that all
Christians share. Just as the Holy Spirit embraced Jesus on the banks of the
Jordan, so we are embraced by the love of God. What will we do and be in
response to that outpouring of love?
Why did God reach out to the ends of the earth for God’s chosen
people? So that they could be a blessing to the nations. While did God go to
the depths of the sea for Jonah? So that he could be saved for God’s purpose.
Why does God go to the ends and the depths for us? Because God loves us, and
not just us but the whole world. God loves us to love the world. And we answer
God’s call, we respond to God’s love if only because when we feel that
belonging, that embrace, we want nothing more than for everybody to feel that,
to belong. And not just people who look like us, or people we already happen to
like or people who happen to live in our hemisphere. But the whole world.
