There are all kinds of diets out there – and
not all diets are created equal. One thing many diets do have in common is that
they require you either to cut out one particular food group completely or to
eat only one food or group of foods for a certain period of time. For example,
one diet cuts out all your carbs. Another diet consists entirely of cabbage
soup. But, most people can’t stay on these diets very long. They’re not
sustainable, and they’re not very good for our bodies.
On the contrary, a good, sustainable, way to
eat is to reduce the unhealthy things we put in our bodies, while also
increasing things that are nutrient-rich. Eating healthfully can literally lead
to longer life!
In today’s passage from John chapter 6, Jesus
reiterates that he is the bread of life – that belief in him is what leads to
eternal life. The reading from Ephesians offers a taste of that bread. It
shows us the kind of abundant and abiding life Jesus talks about. In a way, the
life described in Ephesians is much like a healthy, sustainable diet – getting
rid of the destructive stuff (blatant things like lying and stealing, and more
subtle things like talking badly about others) and taking up more healthy things
(like offering words of grace and being forgiving).
Just
as you might write down the foods you eat to take stock of the healthy and
unhealthy things going into your body, it’s a good idea to look at our
behaviors. Are you putting down the unhealthy and taking up the healthy? Are
you fully living into the abundant, eternal life that Jesus offers?
